Whitespace analysis is finding the gap between what an account could buy and what it currently does: the products it does not own, the divisions it has not rolled out to, or the partner-held accounts you have never sold to at all.
Also called: white space analysis, whitespace mapping.
In a direct sales team, whitespace is usually product-shaped. A customer on two of your five modules has three modules of whitespace, and the expansion plan writes itself. In a partner program it is account-shaped as well: every account your partners hold and you do not is whitespace you can reach without buying a single ad.
The word comes from drawing it as a grid, accounts down one side and products across the top. The filled cells are revenue. The empty ones are the whitespace, and the analysis is deciding which of them are actually reachable.
Account mapping tells you which accounts two companies share. Whitespace analysis tells you what is missing inside an account, whether or not a partner is involved. They are usually run together: the mapping produces the account list, and the whitespace pass decides what to sell into it.
The distinction matters when picking a tool. Mapping needs both sides to contribute data and needs to protect what it reveals. Whitespace needs product and hierarchy data about your own accounts, and mostly needs to be correct about which company owns which subsidiary.
You cannot see most of it. Your partner's accounts are in your partner's CRM, and what you get is whatever they choose to share, usually as a list with the interesting fields removed. The analysis is then only as good as the last export.
The second problem is that the interesting whitespace is often held by a partner who is not incentivised to surrender it. A reseller who owns an account has no obvious reason to help you sell directly into it, and a program that treats their accounts as leads teaches them to share less.
How Airstride does it
Airstride runs whitespace against live partner and CRM data rather than an export, so the gaps update as either pipeline moves.
